When your saree arrives
- Wash and dry your hands, then work on a clean, dry, flat surface.
- Open the folds slowly and support the fabric as you move it. Do not pull, stretch or shake the saree.
- Let the saree rest flat or loosely supported for several hours. Light fold lines from boxed delivery are normal.
Removing fold lines
Do not use a household iron, clothing steamer, bathroom steam, hair dryer, radiator, tumble dryer, spray, mist or direct sunlight. Heat, moisture and pressure can affect silk, dyes, metallic-looking threads, borders and finishes.
For a persistent crease, use a professional cleaner or textile specialist experienced with silk sarees. Show them the product photographs, border, pallu, blouse material and any product-specific care information before treatment.
Cleaning
Do not wet-wash, soak, wring, spot-clean, machine-wash or tumble-dry a silk saree at home. Cleaning is irreversible and may change colour, texture, finish, fringe or woven detail. When cleaning is required, use a professional service experienced with silk sarees.
Before blouse stitching
- Confirm that blouse material is included on the product page.
- Give the tailor the exact blouse-piece measurements listed for that saree.
- Ask the tailor to preserve any woven edge or border you want included in the finished blouse.
- Ask that any pressing or treatment be tested first on an offcut or the least visible area.
A local tailor experienced with saree blouses can help with body measurements, lining, seam allowance, sleeve style, neckline, fastening and finishing.
Storage
- Store the saree clean and completely dry.
- Flat storage is preferred when practical. Otherwise, use as few folds as possible.
- Pad folds with unbuffered, acid-free tissue or clean, prewashed, undyed cotton or muslin.
- Store in a cool, dark, dry and ventilated place away from direct light and moisture.
- Avoid direct contact with ordinary paper, regular cardboard, unfinished wood and plastic dry-cleaning bags.
- Do not stack heavy items on top. Refold periodically along different lines and inspect for moisture, mould or insects.
